“No-Licence” Seems Farce In Invercargill MAGISTRATE’S COMMENT By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, December 17. "This ‘no-licence’ business seems to me to be a farce so far as Invercargill is concerned,” said Mr. W. H. Freeman, S.M., in the hearing of a case to-day in which a man was charged with selling beer in the no-licence district of Invercargill. “It seems to me that the only waj' to overcome the difficulty is for legislators to take it. up. They can’t expect the police or the courts to deal with the situation when a considerable portion of the population is engaged in the illicit sale of beer, or is carrying it or getting a rake-off somewhere.”
Michael Daniel Hughes pleaded guilty to two charges of selling beer in the no-licence district of Invercargill, and W’as fined £7/10/- on each charge. In the second case Cyril Fairweather pleaded guilty to two charges of selling beer in the nolicence district of Invercargill and was fined £lO on each charge.
