WARNING ISSUED
Misuse Of Beaches By Motorists And Others
“I wish to draw attention to the misuse by motorists, horsemen and others of the beaches in the county, and particularly those stretching from Paekakariki to the southern bank of the Waikanae River,” said Cr. F. W. Vickerman at yesterday’s meeting of the Hutt County Council. All these beaches by section 158 of tlie Harbours Act, 1923, were vested in the Hutt County Council, he said. The county had made a by-law for the control of these beaches, and in particular for the prohibition of the general use of them by motor-vehicles, horses and bicycles. In some localities this was permitted, but section 11 (1) of the Motor Vehicles AmendmentAct, 1936, specially exempted the beaches controlled by the Hutt County from such usage. “This posoition cannot be too widely known as the general body of motorists and motor-cyclists have a mistaken idea that the beaches being ideal speedways and belonging to the Crown are there for their use. and/or misuse. The beaches are the heritage of the women ( and children and holidaymakers in general for their use and enjoyment in perfect safety, and every effort should be made to preserve this heritagle. “Campers should be warned that camping on county roads or reserves is absolutely prohibited, and day campers asked to.gather up their own litter and not decorate the countryside with a wealth of rubbish, paper and empty tins.”
