Lord Liverpool Arrives

The new Governor of New Zealand, the Earl of Liverpool, arrived in Wellington by special train from Auckland yesterday. He was welcomed at the station by the mayor and corporation of Wellington, and by Ministers of the Crown, and at 3 p.m. he was sworn iu as Governor of the Dominion. The ceremony took place in front of the Government Buildings in the presence of a large concourse of people. • • *
As the result of a meeting at the Mansion House, London, a British Committee to arrange for the celebration of the centenary of the peace of the English-speak-ing nations has been formed. A' sum of £60,000 is to be raised. The preliminary proposals involve the erection of a monument to George Washington (the first President of the American Republic) at Westminster Abbey, and the purchase of Solgrave Manor, his ancestral home.
