AWAPUNI GALLOPS

Florence Mills Breaks Track Record Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, December 16. The course proper at Awapuni this morning was in perfect, order for galloping and the absence of wind contributed toward the fast times recorded in several of the gallops of horses racing at Ellerslie and Awapuni during the holidays. The flags were out 25 feet from the rails. Florence Mills was responsible for the best gallop of the morning, her five furlongs being one of the fastest ever recorded on the track. Oratory and Laughing Lass also put up fast time for the distance, and Silver River, Great Hope, The Crooner and Catalogue showed up to advantage over five. Quadroon and Wagner ran the smartest six furlongs, and Old Surrey, The Buzzer and The Bigot and Round Score and Alby ran good miles. Final (Chaplin), who has thrown off his soreness, ran home fronj the three furlongs in 39, after taking 14 for the first furlong. Silver River (Chaplin) and Great Hope (Howe) were going well all the ■wav to run the first three of their five furlongs in 38i, and the full distance in 1.3 3-5. Both are greatly improved hacks. Oratory (Broughton) began slightly ahead of Laughing Lass (Tattersall) from the five furlongs, and led to the two furlongs in 37 3-5. They entered the straight together and finished on. terms in 1.3 for the full distance. Both appeared to have a little in hand and Oratory is definitely improved by her race at Woodville. 1 y Interest centred in the mile gallop of the cup horses, The Buzzer (Broughton) and The Bigot (Tattersall). They went off at a leisurely pace to run their first furlong in 14 1-5, the first three in 39 3-5, and the first five in 1.5 3-5. Over the concluding three furlongs they were finishing very strongly and there was nothing between them at the post, the full journey having occupied 1,46 3-5. Both look much better horses as the result of Hieip races at Woodville, The Bigot in particular. The Buzzer and Oratory will go north on Saturday night. Orient Dawn (Rae) ran an easy five furlongs in ,1.9 3-5. Dunmanway (Little), Scgra (Broughton), and the Centrepiece gelding in C. Thomson’s care (Thomson) ran home three furlongs,' the two-year-olds taking 14 for the first furlong and 39 1-5 for the trip. Prediction (Chaplin) came home three furlongs in 38 4-5, and is coming to hand fast. Round Score (Tattersall) and Alby (Chaplin) ran very evenly throughout their mile to cover the . first three in 39 2-5, the five in 1.5 3-5, and the full distance in 1_,46|. They were being shaken up at the finish, but the gallop was nevertheless very satisfactory. The Crooner’s Sprint. For horses whose recent work has been over middle distances, The Crooner (Little) and Catalogue .(Broughton) were impressive in their five furlongs sprint, for they were not pushed out to run 1.4, the last half-mile in 50 3-5. Both were doing well at the finish and The Crooner will go to Ellerslie with Luke Wilson’s team on Monday night. Beaulack (Rue) was given a working gallop over seven furlongs in 1.42. Barcelona (Thomson) ran an easy half-mile in 54 and has made a good recovery from the injuries he received recently. Merry Ruler (Broughton) covered hie six furlongs easily in 1.21. On the plough Wildflower (Tattersall) drew right out from Tail Light (Leach) in the last furlong of their mile, the final six furlongs of which occupied 1.18 2-5. Wildflower worked impressively and will probably race over nine furlongs on Boxing Day. The unbeaten Florence Mills (Johnstone) created a sensation by revealing phenomenal pace over five furlongs in 1.2 2-5, the.first three having been cut out in 36 2-5. She was by no means flat out at the finish and some watches made her record even better figures. ' A very good gallop was registered by the hurdlers Taumau (Broughton) and Conveyor (Little) over a mile in 1.47 1-5, the first three having been run in 39j and the first five in 1.6 2-5. Taumau is improved by his race over hurdles at Woodville. Lady Ina (Broughton) was not bustled to run her half-mile in 53, the last three in 39. She looks a very lit mare. Old Surrey (Little), who was stopping at the finish after cutting out his first half-mile in 54 and the six furlongs in 1.18 3-5, ran the best mile in 1.46 1-5. and is rapidly approaching form again. Quadroon (Johnstone) and Wagner (Broughton) worked over six furlongs under a hold and surprised by running their three in 38 and the first half-mile in 514, while they came home full of running for the full trip to take 1.17 1-5. It was a very good effort in the circumstances. After (he breakfast interval the maiden Shining Hours, who has had an easy time to recover from her cold, worked on the; inside. She has put on a lot' of condition. Copy Cat. (Chaplin) from a standing start ran her first two furlongs down the back in 28. She was then eased up and sprinted home the final two in 26 3-5. Aria (Rae) ran her five furlongs in 1.10 on the bit all the way. Gay Boy (Howe) finished his workout by sprinting home the last two in 25 1-5, but the Manawatu Cup candidate was very lame afterward ano does not look like seeing the post. Dawning Light (Chaplin) ran her six furlongs under a good hold in 1.215. Havana Princess (Pratt) came in from the three furlongs in 39. She has been off her feed for a long while, but is settling down again and beginning to put on some condition. Rolling Home, a tive-year-old gelding
