NEW CITY TRAMS

Non-Compliance With Regulations?

WORKERS RAISE ISSUE

A suggestion by the Tramway Employees’Union that the new trams now being built at Kilbirnle did not comply jn certain respects with the regulations laid down by Order-in-Council was referred to by the mayor, Air. T. C. A. Hislop, at last nights meeting of the AVell'ington City Council.

Mr. Hislop said that the principal objection was to the absence of a partition behind the motorman’s seat. As a matter of fact, a partition was provided for in the new trams, but it did not completely enclose the motorman. The suggestion was that that was contrary. to the Order-in-Council gazetted in 1905, which was quite true. "The point..’’ said Air. Hislop, “is whether the partition is necessary in the new type of tram. The management is of opinion that it is not necessary and that there should be an amendment of the old Order-in-Council. There is no draught, and from the passengers’ point of view, there can be np objection.” Air. Hislop said that with a view to meeting the difficulty it had been suggested that the union should appoint representatives to meet the council on the spot. The union had appointed three motormen and a conductor to represent it at the conference, but was insisting that they should be given the day off on full pay, in spite of the fact that the proceedings would probably occupy not more than half an hour. Cr. W. Appleton: Councillors are giivng their time free. Air. Hislop said his purpose in rais-

ing the question was to. acquaint councillors of the position. The inspecting has been arranged for this morning.
