NATIONAL CLUB

‘‘At Home” And Christmas Party MANY PRESENT The cheery spirit of Christmas ran riot at the National Club last night, when young and old joined in happy festivities at the invitation of Mr. Guy Johnston, president of the club, and Mrs. O. C. Alazengarb, president of the National Union.

The club lends itself admirably for parties, and last night it looked particularly attractive in the soft light of the many deep-coloured electric globes which hung in festoons round the walls and wkjch tinted, in charming fashion, the bowls and large crystal cubes containing pink gladioli and purple irises, with here and there the addition of other colourful blooms. In the lounge were artistic standard lamps and many long-stemmed arum lilies, the walls being covered with appropriate Christmas posters. Over the glass doors leading to the danceroom was a banner wishing one and all a merry Christmas.

The first part of the evening took the form of an “at home,” during which some greatly-appreciated items, vocal and instrumental, were given, with bright interludes in the form of community singing, Miss Florence Penney*'playing the accompaniments. Later a Qance was held, with a break for a most tempting savoury supper, which was served buffet-fashion in the din-ing-room. Many vari-coloured balloons added to the general gaiety of the scene. , The guests were received by Mr. and Mrs. Guy Johnston, the latter wearing a frock of deep burgundy taffeta with a silver belt, and by Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Mazengarb, the latter in black floral ninon. Proceedings opened with a toast to “The King,” proposed by Mr. Johnston, the entire gathering singing the National Anthem. Mr. Johnston wished everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year, adding, “Go away and enjoy yourselves, and come back refreshed for the fight.” “The year 1938,” Mr. Johnston said, “will be one of the most important years in the history of the Dominion, and if we all pull together in team work I feel sure we will go through to victory.” Mr. Mazengarb said his toast would be “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to one and all.” .
