By Telegraph—Press Association.
Auckland, December 15.
The new State houses at Orakei will be officially opened by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, next Thursday, according to a statement by Mr. J. A. Lee, Parliamentary Undersecretary in Charge of Housing. Mr. Savage will welcome a tenant who is to move in that day and will also extend greetings to residents already in occupation of their new homes. Other arrangements in connection with the official opening have not yet been made. With inspections of the new houses at Orakei, Casey’s estate, and Otahuhn today, Mr. J. A. Lee completed his tour of the State housing schemes in about 10 centres on the West Coast between Wellington and Auckland. He expressed satisfaction that the concentration of the ljuge spendingpower of the State Housing Department in the field of the New Zealand manufacturer and the New Zealand producer was giving a magnificent impetus to many Dominion industries. In addition to 3000 men already employed in constructing houses, another 3000 were engaged in producing materials. A tremendous 'demand for clay and cement tiles was bringing into existence a large number of manufacturers who were making splendid use of New Zealand materials and were giving gainful employment to unskilled men.
