ARMY TRAINING

Schools Of Instruction

The progress ma'de by the district Army Schools of Instruction was referred to yesterday by the Minister of Defence, Hon. F. Jones. He said that more than 40 courses had been held at Narrow Neck, Trentham, and Burnham, and that these had been attended by 57 officers and 747 other ranks. Mr. Jones said that the results represented a very satisfactory commencement to this type of training, particularly as the district school at Burnham had been functioning for only two or three months. The courses had been varied and always interesting, the subjects dealt with being Lewis and Vickers gunnery, artillery survey, section leading, signalling, range-taking, projected shooting, and mechanisation. AH the trainees had shown much keenness in the courses. “The aim of these courses,” said the Minister, “is to lay a sound foundation of technical knowledge for the private soldier and to encourage the instructional ability of the non-commis-sioned officers and officers. There is no doubt that the results of this intensive system of instruction will bear consi'derable fruit when the camping season starts in January.” No further courses for Territorials will be held uutil after the Christmas and New Year holidays, but during the present month the annual staff course of the Regular officers and other ranks on the streugth of military districts is being held.
