Newell Sets New Time For 440 Yards By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, December 15. Breaking the New Zealand record for 440 yards by two seconds, L. Newell, Canterbury and Dominion title-holder, definitely established himself to-night as a strong claimant for inclusion in the New Zealand swimming team for the Empire Games. In an attempt on the record of 5.13,2-5 set by G. Bridson. Auckland, nearly six years ago, Newell swam the distance in 5.11 2-5.
