STREET CLEANING
Use Of Flushers Charged
With Disinfectant
For some years past the principal Wellington business streets have been flushed down between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. to remove debris from surfaced roads into the side channels, where it can best be han'dled. Another cleansing and at the same time hygienic agency has been introduced this week. This involves the sluicing of the sides of the main business streets, and under parked cars by means of a street flusher charged with disinfected water. The disinfectant, used is a light one, but it does its work by reason of its being the agent by which all street debris is liquefied in the side channels an'd, thus impregnated, reaches the sumps. The flusher now being used intermittently throughout the day is rather out of date, but the city engineer, Mr. K. E. Luke, hopes that, the city council will authorise the purchase of a modern mechanical motor flusher next year. These machines, which are used in Melbourne and Sydney, cover twice the area in the same time and give great service.
