A GOOD HORSE

Willie Win Strikes Form NOTES AND COMMENTS Australian Yearlings For Dominion (By The Watoheb.) Willie Win affords auotber example of a horse taking his own time to come right. Early in his career be showed Hueh good form that he was hailed as a champion, but in the interval he has bad several failures marked against him, and it was not until recent weeks that he came to the peak of his form, lie is a good horse and should, go further next flat racing season. He is a live-year-old by Polazel from Miss Florence, by Masterpiece from Prayer Wheel. Miss Florence is a half-sister to the dam ot Phar Lap, and of all the much heralded relatives to that world champion Willie Win is the best. This is only his second season, and last season he ran only four times for a second and three wins.

Tliree-year-olds at Ellerslie. Very poor fields contested the three-year-old classic races at Ellerslie this autumn, and Cerne Abbas, who Avon both the Oaks and St. Leger, could not win a hack race at Trentham. Mandamus was defeated only a short head in the St. Leger, and had he struck a firm track he would probably have won easily. He is a better horse than his form indicates, and his owner has had exasperating luck with him in most of his important engagements, for he cannot act in soft going.

Good Class. Tudor appears to be standing up to his work much better than expected. He is a jumper of real class, and will make mattery interesting in big .races this winter.if all goes well with him.

A Great Easter Double. Mr. J. 11. Grigg was a very disappointed man when Concertpitch failed in his race at Trentham, but he received consolation when the Balboa gelding won the Great. Easter on Monday for the second successive year. This feat, has been performed only once previously in the history of the race by Nystad in 1917 and 1918.

Santoft a Bargain. . . ,Santoft, the winner of the principal steeplechase at the Riverton meeting, has been a profitable purchase for Mr. Elworthy since he secured him from Mr. Boyle at the last Grand (National. meeting. He will be a welcome addition to the ranks of our steeplechasers this season. Poor Form.

Although Friesland was at Wairarapa he was not produced and the stable relied upon Lowenberg. He was fancied, but ran poorly, especially on the second day when expected to improve. The turning track.may not have suited him, but all the same, his form was a long way below his best.

The Two-year-olds. fl” The C.J.C. winner, Royal Chief, iw not iu the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Manawatu, but there is a prospect of another meeting between Smoke Screen, Francis Drake and Haughty Winner. The Easter racing failed to clear up the two-year-old supremacy with, any certainty, but there is no doubt concerning the great progress made by Smoke Screen and Royal Chief. But for the cold that came on Francis Drake at Trentham be might possibly be the present unchallenged leader in the two-year-old world. At any rate, it is safe to declare that these three colts nre good class, and if asked for a definite opinion, I would declare in favour of Smoke Screen.

-Australian Yearlings for New Zealand. The Buzzard-Eastern Belle colt, purchased by Wright, Stephenson anil Company at the Sydney sales is a brother to The Buzzer. It would not be surprising if ho were purchased on Mr. Bayly’s behalf. He impressed good judges by his quality prior to the sales. Mr. J. Jameson’s colt b.V Simeon’s Fort was bred at the Kia Ora stud. His sire is an Irish horse by Hainault and was imported by Mr. Eric Connolly in 1927. His dam,’Valeriante, is by Valais from a Roseworthy mare, and the colt is a brother to Bystander. His Mareonigram —Gigolette colt should be a stayer as Mareonigram has sired Marabou and Contact, and Gigolette is by Comedy King from the imported Radium mare Nicolette. In buying the Baralong filly from Torquay. T. R. George relied upon good New Zealand blood, Torquay being by Martian from Torquato, dam also of Martial Dawn, Gauntlet and Bottle Torque. Apart from Martial Dawn, the family perhaps has, not been outstandingly successful, but the blood is there. George’s Doric colt out of Tamarzand was bred by Mr. E. J. Watt. IBs dam is. an English mare by Tamar from Ladas Maid, the dam of Sky Blue. Doric is a Tracery horse, so George’s colt i« inbred to that great English sire, as Tamar is also a son of Tracery. “Chiron” wrote of this eolt that “He has a clean-cut, intelligent head, which is beautifully set on to a long muscular neck. His shoulder is clean and well laid back, giving him a short, strong back. He is a good-bodied coif, and well let down behind. He has really beautiful lines, and •there ia not an atom of lumber about him.”

Classic Successes. The stable of F. D. Jones had the unusual distinction of winning the four Easter classics, Royal Chief securing the Champagne and Challenge Stakes at Christchurch and Cerne Abbas taking both the G.N. Oaks and St. Leger. Bonus for Winners.

The "Waipukurau J.C. is awarding a bonus of 10 guineas to the most successful trainer at its two meetings, last Monday and Saturday next, points awarded being 3 for first, 2 for second, and 1 for third. The following points were scored on Monday:—H. S. Greene 7, W. D. Young 6, A. Dods 5, J. Price 4, C. J. Stowe 4, G. W. B. Greene 4, C. E. Twist (owner) 3, G. D. Beatson (owner) 3, P. J. Wormald 3, E. A. Jones (owner) 2, W. Griffiths 2. W. J. Wood (owner), G. Murray, J. Clements, H. Monteith (owner), and R. Gregory (owner) 1 each. Bad Luck.

Tiger Gain was unable to start at Wnirarapa owing to injuries received in a float which shed a wheel when travelling to the meeting.

Complete Outsider. The “complete outsider” won :i race in Johannesburg recently. Fluctuation, tile winner of the first race at Krugersdorp, was backed neither for a win nor a place, and the consequent dividend proved something of a windfall for the West Rand Racing Club.

Replacing Martara. Mr. C. W. Boyd, Palmerston North, having disposed of Martara, ha.s purchased Sir Mount, a yearling colt by Surveyor from Cometary, and the three-year-old Titlewaiter. These horses were offered tit auction at Auckland on Saturday morning, but wore passed in at 110 guineas and 50 guineas respectively, the sales to Mr. Boyd taking place privately Inter. Sir Mount comes from successful family, his dam being by Day Comet from the I’erriwee mare The Boyne. Tidewaiter

is by Tidal from Ballymoy IL the English mare formerly raced by Messrs. E R. Davis and O. Nicholson.

King Key Sold. When King Rey was submitted to auction in order to close a partnership at the Auckland Racing Chib’s stables at Ellerslie on Saturday by Wright, Stephenson and Company, Limited, he was passed in at 625 guineas. Subsequently he was sold to Mr. N. Grafas lor SOO guineas and two contingencies, and he has gone into (he care of the Te Aroha trainer, H. Eva. Unusual Inquiry. The former Trentham representative, Delium, was the centre of an unusual inquiry at tin? West Coast meeting at Kumera on Monday. Delium staggered after going fifty yards in the preliminary of the Hack Handicap and fell, throwing his rider, A. S. Ellis. After hearing the evidence of the owner, Mr. E. V. Jones,, the trainer, A. McMillian, and the rider, Ellin, the committee accepted the explanations. Mr. Jones, in evidence, said it was only an accident as far as he knew. The course appeared to him to be slippery. The acting-stipendiary steward, Mr, H. Knight, said it did not appear to be an ordinary fall. The trainer, McMullau, said he could not account for it. ’The horse had been all right through the circuit. It looked to him as if the horse bucked and knuckled over ou the off bind leg. Delium was not a good horse in the mud. He had heard it said on the course that Delium was doped, bnt a doped horse would not get up like Delium did after the fall. To t;he stipendiary steward, McMillian said he did not think the horse “could have been got at.” Ellis said that Delium was trying to buck, aud it appeared as if he had just knuckled over. The stipendiary steward said there had been talk about the incident, aud it was only right, that the connections should have an oppor-' tunity of explaining the matter. Delium was later scratched for the Flying Handicap.
