RIVER BOARD RATES
Final Day Before 10 Per Cent. Penalty LAST MINUTE RUSH TO PAY There was a last-minute rush to pay Hutt River Board rates yesterday, the final day before the imposition of the 10 ”er cent, penalty. The board staff was kept busy dealing with a steady rush of payments throughout the day. From 5.30 a.m. to the time the board offices were dosed at 4 p.m., a total o£ £378/11/8 was paid in as compared with £204/13/5 on the final day last year. The rush was especially feverish during the last hour, during which time £BB/2/7 changed hands from the ratepayers to the board.
The total collections for the present financial year amount to £5038/7/11, including arrears. Up to the corresponding date last year £5363/7/1 had been collected. However, in drawing comparisons it should be remembered that there was a reduction in the rates this year, and the percentage of collections this year is better. Letters containing rate payments which reach the offices of the board today will also be taken into consideration and the rebate allowed. The chairman of the board, Mr. J. Mitchell, told “The Dominion” yesterday afternoon that he regarded the collections as .highly satisfactory. These he felt indicated the trend of the times. People were more ready to meet their commitments.
