FOOTWEAR PRICES
Concerted Rise in Hawke’s Bay Dominion Special Service. Hastings, March 31. Since the big rise in footwear prices soon after Hie passing of the new industrial legislation various advances in the price of leather have been reflected in increasing boot and shoe prices. Up to the present, however, there lias been no concerted movement such as will shortly take place in Napier and Hastings. Last week prices for hides increased by 2RI. a lb., and there was an advance of 7d. a lb. in the price of sole leather. New Zealand tanners, too. have been hit by the increases, as with improved quality amt a world shortage of hides a good export trade in tanned leather was being built up. The increased labour costs, however, have resulted in English manufacturers who formerly bought tanned hides purchasing untanned hides and arranging for the tanning to lie done in England.
When the new rise in footwear comes in Hawke’s Bay it will result in an increase of from 2/- to 2/6 a pair in heavier lines.
