HAWKE’S BAY TENNIS TOURNAMENT

Championships Decided

MISS M. MACFARLANE’S HARD FIGHT Dominion Special Service. Napier, March 30. The finals of most events in the Hawke’s Bay Lawn Tennis Clubs open Easter tournament were played to-day at the club’s courts at Marewa, Napier, lhe weather was again favourable, with bright sunshine and a moderate westerly wind. One of the highlights of to-day e play was the championship singles final between Mrs. F. Milburn. Hawkes Bay champion, and Miso M. Macfarlane, Auckland, ex-New Zealand champion, this match was much closer than the score indicates. Miss Macfarlane- proved to have greater severity and her long beau-tifully-angled drives were a feature of her play.' She seemed to attain, equal severity on either backhand or forehand and she disposed of Mrs. Milburn in two straight sets. Mrs. Milburn, howqver, battled strongly, retrieving seemingly impossible shots and sticking gamely to the task. She was unfortunate on several occasions, and although Miss Macfarlane was the better player of the two the scores give no indication of the closeness of the struggle. To-day’s results are as follows:— Men’s Singles Championship. Semi-finals: Hawkesworth beat Lyon, 6-3. 6-3; McLeod beat Best,, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2..
