“BY THE SWORD”

Gandhi on Government in India

AUTONOMY WITHDRAWN

By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright

(Received March 31, 12.49 a.m.)

Ixnnlon, March 30.

The British Government has ended the autonomy which it is claimed the new constitution gave the Indian Provinces.

Mahatma Gandhi told the Madras correspondent of the “Daily Herald” that Government will now be not by pen of a majority of the population, but by the sword. “I claim that Congress asked for nothing more than the British Government claimed the Act gave,” he said. “There is no doubt the Government can and will impose its will till the Indians develop the strength to resist it.”
