The report from Queenstown of the discovery of oil in South Westland recalls the discovery made by a settler of Okuru many years ago. He made periodical visits to the Sounds region. While on one of these visits, lie was struck by the ever-present smell and appearance of oil on the water. He found that the oily substance was coming through the surface water and roust have been coming from the rocky formation at the bottom of the Sound,
