BRITAIN’S FOREIGN POLICY

League of Nations’ View

“The Dominion council of the League of Nations Union views with dismay the recent statement by Mr. Stanley Baldwin and Mr. Anthony Eden on British foreign policy,” states a motion carried at a council meeting yesterday. “It affirms that unconditional removal of sanctions in the present juncture would condone action previously defined as being aggression, and that the recent statements made in explanation of British policy show that the British Government intends to abandon the attempt to preserve peace by organised resistance to any future aggression. “The Dominion council, profoundly convinced of the urgent need for strengthening the League of Nations as an instrument of international peace and of peaceful change, urges upon the Government of New Zealand to declare that sanctions should be withdrawn only on condition that Italy accepts a solution agreeable to the Council of the League; and that the Council of the League should declare its intention of investigating Italy’s legitimate grievances and of satisfying them in every way consistent with the Covenant. ' “The Dominion council further calls upon the New Zealand Government forthwith to communicate this policy to the British Government and to strive by every means . within its power to have this policy adopted by the British Commonwealth of Nations and by the League of Nations.”
