A GREAT CRICKETER
More Laurels for Stuart Dempster CTUART DEMPSTER, the ex-Welling-ton and New Zealand cricketer, has not been long in making his mark in Eng land. This season be is captaining the Leicestershire County eleven, and has done so well with the bat that at the beginning of this month he was second highest on the batting averages for the senior county . championship. Dempster first came into prominence ji when he scored 128 not out and 41 for * New Zealand against Vernon Hansford's Melbourne eleven in 1927. That year be . was a member of the New Zealand cricket • - team which toured England, and headed
the batting averages, aggregating over 2000 runs, and scoring six centuries. On the 1931 tour of England, he again had biggest aggregate and average, piling on 1778 runs in first-class matches, and scoring seven centuries. Strangely enough. Dempster only scored two centuries in Plunket Shield games in New Zealand, both against Canterbury—--141 in 1929-30. and 154 in 1931 32. Dempster will go far in the game, as he has brought the science of batting down to a fine art. and it is almost impossible tn hit his sticks if be has made up his mind to remain at the wickets.
lan Crockett, the Canterbury (New Zealand) forward, has joined Wigan Rugby League Club.
