WAITARA GATHERING
A Notable Maori Occasion
' Many visitors are expected to travel to Waitara on the occasion of the unveiling of the monument to Sir Maui Pomare, and the formal opening of the carved memorial meeting-house at Waitara on Saturday. The ceremony will be performed by the Governor-General, Lord Galway. The occasion is an historic one, both as regards the linited associated tribes of Taranaki and the Maori race generally. The late Sir*Maul Pomare may justly be claimed to be the most illustrious of his tribe. The Taranaki tribes, with Hie general approval of the Maori race, have felt it fitting to commemorate his memory and have erected a monument Wiiich gives at least some expression to tire great respect in which lie was held by his tribe and Maoris generally. Those who visit Waitara will have the opportunity of seeing a display of traditional Maori ceremonial at its very best, and, in addition, will be enabled to observe the beauties aud harmony of Maori carving and craftsmanship. Tire carved meeting-house contains examples of the very best type of Maori art.
