SALES INCREASING

Nitrate of Soda From Chile

Dominion Special Service. Auckland, June 22.

Trade relations between New Zealand and Chile were discussed by Mr. R. Dundas Smith, of Sydney, ConsulGeneral for Chile in Australia and New Zealand, on his arrival from Sydney by the Aorangi to-day. Mr. Smith, who is a through passenger, is on his way to Suva. “I am very glad to say that sales of nitrate of soda from Chile are increasing,” he said. “I do not know .whether or not that is the result of the new Government, blit sales are going up both in New Zealand and Australia.”

At one stage, he said, before the war and before the introduction of synthetic products about 3,000,000 tons, of nitrate was being exported from Chile annually. This amount had fallen considerably, but the present trend was toward an increase. _ ; Chile was now under settled government and was progressing very favourably, Mr. Smith, added. Recently big sulphur deposits had been found and British capital was being used to e.y ploit' them. It would not be long before' Some of New Zealand’s requirements" were being supplied from this source.
