WORK OF THE SESSION
Rent Restriction Bill Next Week MIDWINTER RECESS There is little possibility of Parliament adjourning for its midwinter recess before the second week in June, according to a statement made last night in an interview by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage. Pleasure at the progress that has been made in the passage of legislation, especially in the week just ended, was expressed by Mr. Savage, but there were other measures, he said, which would have to receive the al tention of the House before the adjournment.
It was gathered from remarks made by Mr. Savage that the Government’s second mortgage Bill, providing for a readjustment of mortgages on the basis of the guaranteed price for dairy products, is not likdly to appear before the reetts. The Government originally desired to have this particular measure passed before the break, but the law draftsman's office has been working at high pressure during the last few weeks and the Minister of Finance, Hon. IV. Nash, who would naturally take charge of such a Bill, has had to contend with a very great volume of work.
After the recess the House will probably meet early in July, and with the second mortgage Bill then ready there should be ample time to have it passed and to engage a large field staff on valuations before the guaranteed price scheme becomes operative in August.
The Prime Minister said last night that the Rent Restriction Bill would probably be introduced on Tuesday. It also hnd been delayed hy the pressure of work in the law-drafting office. In addition, an Imprest Supply Bill would have to receive the attention of the House and be passed before the recess.
