100 YEARS OLD
Mrs. H. E. Knell, Greytown
Her hundredth birthday was celebrated on Thursday by -Mrs. Harriet Elizabeth Knell, Kuratawhiti Street, Greytown. .Mrs. Knell, who came to New Zealand in the ship Wild Duck (Captain Bishop) in January, 1864, arrived at Wellington, but has lived at Greytowu for 72 years, during which time she has always been ready to assist in any charitable organisation for the benefit of institutions in the district, In her younger days she was well known as organist at the Anglican Church at Greytown, and frequently assisted at concerts and other entertainments.
As a young woman, in England, she was governess to two young men who later made their imine iu the political world. She also went to Constantinople to educate the children of a distinguished Greek family, and was there during the Crimean War. Mrs. Knell had three daughters and four sons. One of the latter, Mr. W. J. Knell, recently retired from the position of manager of the Bank of New Zealand at I’icton. He now lives at Greytown. Miss A. Knell lives with her mother, other members of the family residing in various parts of the Dominion.
.Mrs. Knell is still active, and even now will be found knitting or doing some other work to assist anyone noise fortunately situated as herself. Her maiden name was Boor, and she is a sister of Dr. Boor, who many years ago resided at the corner of Bolton Street and 'Wellington Terrace. On her birthday she had the honour of receiving a cable of congratulation from King Edward. (Picture on Page 9-)
