OBITUARY
Admiral Sir C. Thursby London, May 28. The death has occurred of Admiral Sir Cecil Thursby. whose burly thickset figure and bulldog jaw will be remembered by every Anzac whose disembarkation ho covered at Gaba Tepe. He was not only a fighting sailor, but also a first-class diplomat. By the time he was 16 Admiral Thursby had served in his first naval engagement. Born in 1861, he entered the Navy in 1574. and was a midshipman in the Amethyst when she [ought the Peruvian ship Hu.-isear. He served at Souakim in ISS4 85, and at tlie Dardanelles during the Great War. being mentioned in dispatches, and was in charge of the landing of tlie Australian and New Zea land forces at Gaba Tepe. In 1916 he received the command of tlie British Adriatic Squadron, and in 1917 was Commander-in Chief in tlie Eastern Mediterranean. In the following year he became commander of ("’oastguard and Reserves. and in 1919-20. until he retired, he was commander at Plymouth. He was promoted Admiral in 1919. He was made a K.C.B. for his services in the Mediterranean during the war, and a K.C.M.G in 1916. He also held a number of foreign orders.
