BOROUGH FINANCES

Position at Eastbourne ‘’The rate collections on account of current year's rates hare been well maintained,” stated the report of the town clerk and general manager, Mr. C. L. Bishop, presented to the meeting of. the Eastbourne Borough Council last night. “To the end of February the total collected for the current year, including discount allowed, represented approximately 88 per cent., as against S2 per eent. last year. The total of current rates and arrears collected this year now exceeds the total amount of rates struck for the year. The collection of arrears is now receiving special attention! The general receipts in this department are somewhat in excess of those estimated and will be a help toward showing a satisfactory position at the end of the financial year.” Because of the unsatisfactory February weather, traffic revenue showed a falling off of approximately £2OO as compared with February of last year. Receipts for the 11 months from ferry department were approximately £275 below last year’s, but the expenditure was correspondingly lower, and the net result for the full year would be nearly the same as for the previous year. In the omnibus department receipts for the 11 months were approximately £450 higher than for the corresponding period of the previous year. ’

“We are not booming,-but we are going steadily-a head-,”- a councillor-com-mented when the report was read.
