COTTAGE HOMES

Scheme of Dominion-wide Application UNIT NEARLY COMPLETED Dominion Special Service. . Christchurch, March IV. Although the needs of Canterbury and Westland tire given preference, applications under the cottage homes settlement scheme for returned soldiers are receivable from all parts of New Zealand, tbe scheme being on a Do-minion-wide basis. One stage of tbe scheme has almost been completed, with the erection of a unit of six cottages al Sandllauds. The qualifications'are that the ap plicant be a returned soldier of good character, who has developed economic disabilities. This fact was made clear at. a meeting of the general committee of tbe Cottages Homes Settlement Scheme, when members decided uot to build any more homes until after the opening of the present unit, which wilt take place upon tbe completion of a beautifying scheme which has now been agreed to. In asking whether the cottage scheme was of Dominion application, Mr. H. Lightband said that it was realised when tbe scheme was begun that there would be difficulty in obtaining enough applicants from Canterbury to till more than the one unit of homes now established. Ou the site there was room for about <5O cottages. When applications from the province had been exhausted would applications from outside associations be sought? Canterbury applications would not increase and they would soon come to an end. Mr. E. F. Willcox, the secretary of the association, said that applications would be accepted from all parts of New Zealand. Tbe plan was a big one and as Dominion funds were being used it was just that it should be for tbe benefit of the whole Dominion. Canterbury and Westland merely had preference; there was another section of returned men who received second consideration, and after that all were on an equal footing. The desire of those who had contributed to the fund would be fulfilled only if the schem? were on a Dominion basis.
