COLLEGE SOCIAL
Parents Meet Teachers The great advantage to be obtained by personal contact between parents and teachers was amply shown when nearly 200 guests were entertained at the annual social gathering of the Queen Margaret College Parents’ Association.. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet the president, Mr. O. C. Mazengafb, referred to the improvements at the college which had been effected through the joint efforts of the board and of the parents’ association. He stated that the board of governors had been incorporated and the parents could now feel that the college was indeed their own school and that through the association they had a voice in its management; The principal, Miss I. Wilson, M.A., spoke very interestingly of the tuition provided for the scholars and explain ed various ways in which parents could help the girls to obtain the best results. She appealed for co-operation with the teachers and urged parents to consider the advantages of the school leaving certificate as an alternative to matriculation for those girls who did not propose to proceed to the university. At the conclusion of Miss Wilson’s address, the president asked her to accept a clock as a token of the very high regard in which she was held. This incident was greeted with hearty applause and musical honours were accorded Miss Wilson. A new teacher, Miss Symes, on being introduced to the gathering, spoke of her special work as being to induce correct habits of speech, and advocated verse-speaking and speech-training as being much more desirable than that form of elocution which had been so often condemned as artificial. During the evening the parents enjoyed some delightful music by Mesdames J. A. Doctor and E. A. R. Jones and Misses Barton, Atkinson and Chamberlain. Supper was served by the ladies of the committee and opportunity was taken to introduce individual parents to the various teachers having the oversight of their girls. The chairman of the board, Mr. S. Eichelbaum, expressed the thanks of the governors to the association, the musicians and others who had contributed to the success of the evening and outlined the plans of the board for the addition of new buildings. The members of the association curtailed the business of electing officers for the ensuing year and showed their confidence in the management of the affairs of the association by re-electing all the officers as follows:—President, Mr. O. C. Mazengarb; vice-president, Mrs. J. S. Martin; secretary-treasurer, Mr. G. R. McKellar; representatives on board of governors, Messrs. R. E. Luke and W. M. Page.
