Gyles in Strong Position RESULTS OF PLAY Championship play iu the 45th New Zealand Chess Congress was advanced on Saturday to the fourth round in both men's tournaments, and the third round of the women's tournament. Two further rounds will be played to-day, commencing at 1.15 aud 6.45 p.m. In the major championship A. W. Gyles (as yet unbeaten) by defeating C. J. S. I’urdie, drew equal with him iu tb<> lead, with the additional advantage of having one game in band, whereas I’urdie has suffered a loss. R. Wall, D. Langley, and A. S. Goldsmith head the minor championship, but the first two have each lost, a game, while Goldsmith has one to play. Mrs. Abbott is as yet unbeaten iu tlie women’s chanipiouship.
