Nephew of Native King
F A “ out on the South African veldt Geoffrey Barkas and his band of film-makers are making good progress with the Gaumont-British film, “Rhodes.” Assisted by the military authorities and thousands of native warriors, the scenes that have already been shot include some splendidly spectacular impressions of life in Matabeleland before Rhodes’s pioneers occupied the country. After an extensive search Director Geoffrey Barkas has found the perfect type of native to play the role of the famous Matabele King, Lobengula, and his choice lias been favoured by the fact that this man is a nephew of the dead monarch, and a member of the royal house. Barkas writes: “The moment I saw him I knew I had found my man. His features bear an extraordinary resemblance to his uncle, Mbengula, and his immense dignity and bearing told me that here was a man suitable in every way to portray the supreme head of a proud and mighty nation.”
