Young Woman’s Critical Injuries

Arising out of the shooting occurrence at. Te Afatai Road, Whakarongo, near Palmerston North, late yesterday afternoon, a young man. Manly Symes, labourer, aged 22 years, was charged in the Police Court this morning with assault on his wife. Elsie Elizabeth Symes, and causing actual bodily harm. Mr. IV. Lowe Black. J.P.. was on the bench. On the application of Detective E. Barling,* a remand was granted until August 1. Mrs. Symes was taken to ilie Palmerston North Hospital in a critical condition, a. pea rifle bullet having entered her stomach. When he appeared in the court this morning, Symes had a wound and contusions about Hie right eye. PAHIATUA SHARE MILKER By Telegraph.—Press Association. Paliiatua, July 25. Manly Symes, who has been arrested at Palmerston North on :i ebarge of assaulting his wife, is share milking on the farm of Mr. David Crewes at Mangaranyarama. close to I’ahiatna. He came from Foxion. IS months ago, At present he is on holiday, his brother minding the farm iu his absence. Accused had signed a fresh contract for the coming season, and expected to be back shortly. His employer always regarded him as a good-tempered, industrious young fellow, who seemed well satisfied with his job, and was doing quite satisfactorily on the farm.
