ANTI-JEWISH STEPS

Reported German Object

DIVERTING ATTENTION London, July 22. The Berlin correspondent of the “Manchester Guardian” says that the anti-Semitic campaign is a desperate attempt Io divert public attention from economic realities. The collapse of foreign trade and the failure of Dr. Schacht’s new plan to remedy it have caused widespread fears of inflation among the investing and propertied classes, and the masses are discontented at the low wages. The Stahlhelm organisation strongly resisted Hitlerism, especially in respect to anti-Semitism, and if the Nazis dissolved it throughout Germany it would be difficult to prevent its reappearance in another form. Meanwhile Nazis are concentrating on tlie Jews. General Daleuge, a colleague of Count von Helldorf, the Berlin Chief of Police, denounces Jews as criminals and declares that pickpockets are almost all Jews, who are also the principal drug traffickers, gaminghouse proprietors, and sponsors of other illegal activities. MUST NOT PARADE Roman Catholic Youth Organisations MINISTER ISSUES DECREE (Received July 23, 7.50 p.m.) Berlin, July 23. Dr, Frick, Minister of the Interior, has issued a decree prohibiting Roman Catholic youth organisations from wearing uniforms and badges, parading with Hags, and performing open-air exercises. "Catholic youth organisations have recently transgressed the limits set by the Government,” says the decree. “The Government, will no longer tolerate this practice, which endangers public order and safety.”

Severe sentences were imposed on two Catholic priests at Berlin yesterday for violating the foreign exchange regulations. Father Utsch was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment and fined £6250, and Father Wilmsen was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and fined £1660.

Arrests of Jews continue in many parts.
