Metal Workers’ Dispute

Failure to agree on wages for adults in the metal-working industry caused parties to a dispute heard in the Conciliation Council iu Wellington yesterday to adjourn the proceedings to July 31. Agreement was reached on nearly all other points, including the retention of a 44-bour week, though the employees had asked for a 40-hour week of five days. • Mr. P. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, presided. The applicants for the dispute were the Wellington Metal Workers’ Assistants’ Industrial Union of Workers. Assessors for the employees were Messrs. J. Regan, J. 11. Collins, S. FerreU and A. Murray, and for the employers Messrs. W. J. Mountjoy (advocate), R. Cable, E. W. Maclean, S. Luke and D. Jamieson. It was agreed that holidays should be as In the old award. The wage rates proposed by the parties, those suggested by the employers being iu parentheses were: Adults, 2/2 an hour (1/9); wages of boys and youths, from 16 to 17 years of age. £2/10/- a week (12/6); from 17 to 18, £2/13/- (fl) : from IS to 19, £3 (£l/7/6) ; from 19 to 20, £3/5/- (£l/15/-) ; from 20 to 21, £4 (£2/2/6); thereafter minimum rates (agreed); meal money, 1/6 (1/3); dirt money, 1/6 a day extra (1/3) ; workers employed at manure work or casing factories, 3/- a day extra (workers not regularly employed at manure works, 1/9).
