OVERSEAS TRADE

Marked Increase In Imports

EXPORTS DECREASE

Favourable Balance Lower

The main features of the overseas trade returns of the Dominion, released yesterday by the Customs Department, are a substantial decline in the value of exports and a continued increase in imports, factors which go a long way in reducing fhe favourable balance of “visible” trade. The values stated below are all in New Zealand currency. Imports last month were valued at £2.350.000, an increase of £028.000, eontpitri'd with those for June. 1934. The position is shown in lite following eompanative table: — Month Exports Imports Excessoi of txports

Exports for the six months ended June 30 were valued at £27,109.000. a failing-off of £4.389,000 compared with the corresponding period of last year, but an advance of £3.747.000 compared wilh the exports for tlie first six mouths of 1933. During tlie twelve montlis ended June, exports were valued at. £42,954,000. a decrease of £G,ISS,OOO. compared with those for tlie year ended June 3°. 1934. This decrease is largely accounted for by tlie lower prices of wool ami tlie greatly reduced exports of tin* staple. Imports for Hie twelve months ended June were valued at £31.302.000. an advance of £7.59’9.000 compared witli those for the preceding twelve months, and of over £9.000.000 on those for the year emled June 30. 1933.
