P. and O. Experiment (From “The Dominion,” February 17, 1810.) The P. and O. steamer Malwa arrive:! at Auckland at 7 o’clock yesterday morning. At midday the Hons. Dr. Findlay and G. Fowlds attended a luncheon on the steamer. The Malwa left promptly at 6 o’clock on her return voyage, carrying over 100 passengers. She took no cargo, but took away bullion valued at over £27,000. Speaking to a reporter, Mr. Trelawney, superintendent for the P. and O. Company for Australasia, said that three trial trips had been decided upon. He pointed out that it is not intended to enter- into competition with the Union or Huddart Parker companies in the trade between Sydney and Auckland; that is demonstrated by the fact that the P. anl O. Company is charging £2 more than either of the two local companies for passages between the two ports. What the company is aiming at is to catch the Home traffic, both to and from New Zealand, by enabling passengers to book right through.
That great interest was taken in th" match between G. Hackenschmiclt and R. J. Scott for the wrestling championship of the world was amply shown bv the large attendance at the -Wellington Town Hall last night. when the pair measured their skill. It is estimated that 1106 were present, all parts of the large building, except the circle, being well filled. Among the spectators (it is interesting to nofe) were a number of members of the fair sex. who seemed to be deeply interested in the proceedings, The consummate ease with which Hackenschmidt won will occasion some surprise to those who were not present, for Scort has a wide reputation.
The Wellington Unitarian Church last night was filled to its utmost extent when the members of the congregation and personal friends of Dr. Tudor Jones, the minister, gathered to bid him farewell on the eve of his departure for England.
