THREE FINES OF £100
Men Caught With Opium Melbourne, February 12. Three men who were arrested after an exciting pursuit by Customs officials were charged with having opium in their possession. Each was fined £lOO and ordered to be imprisoned until the fines were paid. Counsel for tlie Crown stated that 500 ounces of opium valued at between £5OO and £looo'had been.found in parcels thrown away by tlie men during tlie chase.
Customs officers at Melbourne early in the morning of February 3 effected a big opium seizure. They saw three men acting suspiciously in a flat-bottomed boat near an overseas steamer berthed in the River Yarra. Later they saw them row iaway and transfer something to a motor-van further down the river. Customs officers in ears pursued the motorvan at high speed, firing many shots at its tires. Eventually they overtook the van, and arrested the trio. Quite a number of tins of opium were afterward picked up along the route of tjhe pursuit.
