DUNEDIN BEACHES
Visited By Millions of Jellyfish / ». ■ Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, February 12. Fine weather has enticed thousands of people and millions of small jellyfish to the cooling surf in the past few weeks. As the tide recedes each day a slippery transparent mass is being left on coastal beaches, especially at St. Clair, where the salty sea tang is tinged with a fishy odour associated witli the decay of marine life. But however unpleasant this unwelcome visitor is, he lias at least one redeeming feature. No eases of bathers being stung have yet teen reported. In the North Island the specimens are much more dangerous, and can inflict a painful sting, whereas the largest of the jellyfish that have invaded Dunedin’s teaches measure about Gin. in diameter.
A local authority on marine life said that lie had often seen jellyfish a foot and a hall: in diameter. Dunedin’s visitors are of shrimp size in comparison.
