English Girl Cricketers Beat Southland FIRST SIX OF TOUR By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, February 12. The English women cricketers played ■ a match against a Southland team to- ? day in hot sunny weather. The visi- S tors won the toss and batted on a good wicket. They treated the spectators to some entertaining cricket, runs coming at a lively pace. A high standard was reached, features being the correct stroke production of some of the English players and the clean, smart fielding of the Southland girls. G. Horgan and M. Child opened for England and put on 83 before Child wag caught for a stylish 48. Morgan was also caught when she 41. After the fourth wicket had fallen at 148, J. Partridge and B. Archdale became associated in a bright partnership that carried the score to 235 for four, at which stage the English eaptain declared the innings closed. Partridge batted soundly and was unbeaten with the top score of 76. Archdale hit freely and her 45 not out included the first six of the tour. Southland Slumps. The Southland girls began con- ■ fidently but slumped' badly at the end of the innings, four wickets falling without any addition to the score. They were all out for 66 (M. Gerken 16, E. Chamberlain 13, E. Ferguson 11, I. Dickson 10, E. Bell 10). ; Partridge’s < slows had the Southlanders in trouble and she finished with six wickets for 39 runs. ■ Southland followed on and at the close of play had lost six wickets for , 28 (E. Bell 14). In her one over G. Morgan took three wickets for four runs. MISS PICKERING’S INJURY Miss I. Pickering, vice-captain of the New Zealand women’s cricket team,'lias had -to withdraw from play in the test match to be held at Christchurch, owing to a foot injury received during the match against the Englishwomen at Wellington.
