HAWERA RACES

Fields For To-day FORM AND PROSPECTS Egmont and Nolan Cups

(By

"The Watcher.”)

Good fields are carded for the opening of the Egmont Racing Club’s meeting today, which will be concluded tomorrow. The Egmont Cup has drawn a fair and even lield of nine, including the winners of the 'Wanganui and Taranaki Cups, and there are some good hacks in the Nolan Cup. Track conditions will probably be firm and fast, but there if. a good sole of grass on the course proper. The win and place system of betting will operate, with the assistance of the dividend barometers. March Alone has been raised 171 b. for his two wins at Taranaki, but that brings him up only to 10.4, at which he should again run well. On recent form Headland may prove his most dangerous opponent, but Alloy may run well. Ythan will have to improve, as will Beau Star and Gowanlea. Favourites are likely to be March Alone and Headland. The Flying Handicap field is not strong in class. Sanguine King has good winning form, but British Columbia looks well in, and should be prominent. Ruri had his first race for some months at Taranaki, and ran well, but be may still lack a bit of seasoning. Hunt the Slipper and Full Throttle are possibilities on last week’s running. The best backed may be British Columbia and Hunt the Slipper. Pladie. who heads the hack sprint, is also in the Nolan Cup. He should run well in either event. The Ark, Harvest Moon, Panloff and Ringside are form possibilities. Pladie may be the favourite if he runs with The Ark and Panloff also likely to carry money. Compared witli the Taranaki Cup. (here are one o r two fresh horses iu the field for the Egmont Cup, but running last week promises to have a big bearing. Hazoor meets Fersen 71b, and Cherry King meets him 91b.. better, but they will both have to run ripfht up to then* best to reverse placings. Fersen won well, and is still at a handy weight. Hazoor may make most improvement, however, as he is short of racing. Aga Khan will require improvement on his Taranaki form, but he may make it, as he will be on bis home track. Tiger Gain meets him Sib. better, and he is worse off by a pound against Cherry King who finished well in front of him last week. Rust should be a lightweight possibility, but Monanui, Taitoru and Alloy’s prospects do not appear particularly bright. Form points to Hazoor and Fersen. with Aga Khan a possible upsetting factor.

The presence of northern horses complicates the form in the Juvenile Handicap, and there is not strong opposition to be offered them, with the possibe exception of Fairfax, Joy Box or Grateful. Velocipede and Triune are bracketed, and should provide formidable opposition. The favourites may be Velocipede, Lifeguard and Fairfax. The Hack Cup will give backers a hard task. Several useful hacks with evenly balanced form, make up the field, and the issue appears very open. Tladie, Tnliurangi, Lapel. St. Clara, Cereal. Onewhetu and Ingenuity must all be considered, and lliis does not exhaust the list of possibles, though those named seem the most likely on recen form. Most money may come for Pladie, Lapel, and Tahurangi. Pomp's form last week did not impress but he looked exceptionally well, and as he will to-day be ridden by L. G. Morris, he may run his usual sound race for that horseman. Midian should be prominent, and Glenvane will have a better oportunity over the longer distance. Improvement will be necessary with Chief Marionette and Bonnie Vale. The best backed may be Midian and Glenvane. Several of the hacks in the concluding event claim prior engagements. Onewhetu and Dorado might find it easier in this race than in the hack cup, while Prince Reno. Note Issue and Inveresk should run well. Favourites may be Onewhetu, Inveresk and Note Issue.
