RACE PROTEST
Win of Rin Tin Tin WAS RIDER ELIGIBLE? The decision in the Hornby Handicap, the first race at Riccarton on Saturday, is the subject of a protest, it is understood, and the stakes have been impounded until the connections of Imperial Spear, the second horse, decide to continue with the matter or not. The protest concerns the qualification of B. Shand, rider of the winner, Rin Tin Tin, as a hurdle or steeplechase rider, the condition being that jockeys in this event shall have ridden in not fewer than three hurdle or steeplechase races in the previous two years. According to a statement made by Shand to the stipendiary steward, Mr. G. N. McLean, that jockey has ridden in three jumping races within the prescribed period, but on one of those occasions ii was a chance ride, he having mounted a fallen horse and completed the race on the animal.
If Shand needs the inclusion of this incident to qualify him, then it is apparent he must be ruled out, as he was not the official rider of the horse and could not have weighed out.
If the judicial committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club is asked to give a ruling, the qualification of Shand will hay' 1 a vital bearing on the eligibility of Rin Tin Tin to be recorded as the winner of the Hornby Handicap.
