SIGNS OF RETURNING PROSPERITY
Demand For Telephones NEW SUBSCRIBERS IN JUNE QUARTER Dominion Special Service. Auckland, August 22. The decline in the number of telephone subscribers in Auckland caused by many people voluntarily going off the list as a result of the depression has now been arrested, according to a statement made by an official of the Post and Telegraph Department. In one quarter recently there was a net increase of 156 subscribers in the city, and this is regarded as a definite indication of better times. “Two or three years ago, when conditions were bad, many people took the view that private telephones were a luxury which they could afford to do without,” the official said. “Many telephone connections were cancelled and there was a steady falling off in the number of subscribers. T-welve months ago we were losing ground badly, but now it is being rapidly recovered. In the June quarter -we had as many new subscribers as there were in the June quarter of 1929, which was an exceptionally good year. Seeing that most people who gave up their telephones did so for reasons of economy, the recent recovery in the number of subscribers can be taken as a fairly clear indication of improved conditions.”
