EPIDEMIC OF MEASLES
School Roll Depleted MANAWATU JOTTINGS Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North. December 19. As a result of an outbreak of measles at the Te Arakura primary school, the school roll has fallen from 65 pupils to 15 rnnils. It is understood that the committee approached the M anganui ~,.011 board wiien the first signs of the outbreak were evident, but the board did not then regard the outbreak as sufficiently serious to warrant the closing of the school before the appointed time for the summer holidays. Amateur Cycling Races. • The Manawatu Amateur Cycling Club held a meeting at the sportsground last night, when the following events were decided Half-mile: E. Lawrence (5 vds.l. 1; E. Astin (40yds.), 2; R. Walker (45yds.), 3. Time, lmin. llsec. Mile: L Haves (170yds.), 1; R. Hobbs (140 yds.), 2; R. Walker (90yds,), 3. Time. 2min. 17scc. Mile scratch race: E. Lawrence, I; E. Astin, 2; M. Gardner, 3. Time, 2min 30sec. Second mile scratch race: R. Walker, 1; L. Hayes, 2; R. Thomas, 3. Time, 2min. 33see. School Swimming. The Central School pupils held an inter-house swimming competition in the school baths yesterday afternoon. The points were scored as follow : Marsden, 98 points; Grey, 77 points; Hobson, 68 points; Wakefield, 61 points. Cheltenham Rifle Club. The Cheltenham Rifle Club held a shoot for the Smithers Cup last Saturday. J. Osborne (3) and P. Burrell (9) each scored 94 points, but the former was declared the winner on the count back. The shoot was held over ranges of 200 and 300 yards.
Rotary Year Closed. The Palmerston North Rotary Club closed a successful year last night when members and their wives were entertained in Messrs. Collinson and Cunninghame's tea rooms at dinner. An interesting address on “Early Palmerston North” was delivered by Mr. E. R. B. Holben, after which members were entertained with a bright musical and elocutionary programme.
Palmerston’s Bus Service. An increase of 36 in the number of passengers carried by the municipal buses during November when compared with the’eorrespbndihg month of last year was reported to last night’s meeting of the Palmerston North City Council. The increase in revenue was £l/4/10. The council’s two new buses, which were expected to be ready. for the .Christmas traffic, have not been .completed yet. but it is expected that they will be ready for the traffic at the New Year.
