RESIDENTIAL NURSERY

Surprise Party at Hutt A delightful surprise party in the form of a coin evening took place recently at the home of Mrs. Burgess, Taita, president of the Lower Hutt branch of the Residential Nursery, and the funds of that body will benefit to a very satisfactory extent as a result. The rooms were gay with lovely spring flowers, violets, and camellias from the garden. A very jolly evening was spent in playing games, and the winners of the competitions proved to be Mrs. Brasendale, who won an advertised competition, and Mrs. Lines, who was the winner of the prospecting competition. Mrs. Peterson, secretary of the Lower Hutt Residential Nursery, warmly

thanked Mrs. Burgess for her hospitality. The visitors provided a savoury supper, and delicious fruit salad was provided by Mrs. Burgess. A vocal item by Mrs. W. Burgess was much enjoyed. Among those present were: Mrs. J. W. Andrews (Mayoress), Mr. and Mrs. Peterson, Mr. and Mrs. Hooson, Mr. and Mrs. Whiteman, Mrs. Lowe, Mr. and Mrs. Knox, Mrs. Hollis, Mr. and Mrs. Lines, Mr. and Mrs. Charlesworth, Mrs. Fauvel, Mr. and Miss Clark, Mr. Von Borson, Mr. and Mrs. Tamblyn, Miss Tamblyn, Mrs. Brasendale, and Mr. Greenslade.

A number of property owners on the Main Plateau Road are greatly concerned over a report that the magnificent old pines on that.road are about to be cut down. A petition was received by the Hutt County Council yesterday from 63 residents of the locality asking the council to refuse any applications made for timber cutting rights. It was decided to inform the petitioners that the council had not received any such applications, and had no intention of granting any that might be made. Although the annual influx of American visitors to England has been smaller this year than usual, the loss was) more than made up by the increased number of Continentals, particularly Germans, who went to London.
