SALARIES AND STAFFS
State Departmental Heads INTERESTING COMPARISON In an editorial published in the July issue of “The Public Service Journal,” there is a table showing the salaries paid to several administrative officers in the Public Service and the strength of the staff under their control. A plea is made for greater recognition of the responsibilities attached; to the major positions in the service. “Our postal system and our railways possibly are the biggest State institutions in this country, with a staff of over 20,000,” states.the article.. The Secretary of this former well-organised Public Service receives £1023 per annum, while the General Manager of Railways is paid £1312. The Commissioner of Government Life Insurance has to carry his load for £866,; while the General Manager of the State Fire Office has to be content with a similar amount.” The article gives some of the salaries payable to other permanent heads, together with the number of staff controlled by each: —
’’And the Public Service Commissioner himself, the central figure of a,ll, draws £IISI per annum, or £319 per annum less than the salary attached to the office in 1912,” continues the article. “There are thus about thirty to forty positions in a public service of some 50,000, the occupants of which are paid over £7OO per annum, and this at a stage in the Service history when the qualifications of our individual Public Servant are required to be of a higher calibre than ever before.” The best indication of the percentagedistribution of salaries is given in the
