STUDENTS’ FESTIVITIES

Extravaganza This Evening “CAPPING WEEK” BEGINS Victoria University College “Capping Week” will commence officially this evening with the presentation at the Grand Opera House of the annual students’ extravaganza. Three performances will be given, to-night and Monday and Tuesday evenings, the undergraduates’ supper will take place on Thursday evening, and the graduation ceremony will be held on Friday evening, to be followed by the capping ball on the same evening, an event which will mark the end of a week of jollification and festivity. Following the precedent of last year, three shorter sketches, in place of the customary one, will be presented this evening. They are entitled, “The Gully-Trap” or “News from Moscow”; “Great Caesar,” and “Mr. Galahad.” the first and last-named having been written by Mr. Redmond Phillips, who wrote the very successful “Coax and Hoax,” of last year. “The Gully Trap” is a satirical burlesque on the doings in Wellington of what are known as the Sons of the Soviet. Those taking- part are M. J. Monntjoy, Jnr.. Peggy Spence Sales. Redmond Phillips, Peggy McDonald and Carl Watson. “Great Caesar,” in which Allona Lambourne. G. C. Crossley. J. Foster and U. Williams appear, is n historical sketch bringing Caesar to light in some impossible and screamingly funny situations. "Mr. Galahad” is described as a musical extravaganza in two acts, and in it are introduced topical allusions to matters of current interest, plenty of wit and bright student repartee, and solo and ballet dancing of the highest order. The story is laid far away in the Peppercorn Mountains, where a crowd of debutants from Wellington are in search of fiances, who have been converted to (lie Quasi-Nazis. One of the debutants, Tanagra, sees in Galahad her soulmate, and from this the story leads on to an interesting conclusion through a maze of intrigue, wholesome foolery, and witticisms. The principal roles are taken by U. Williams, Marjorie Murray. Zenoerate Henderson. Rani Miller, Alfred Katz, and A. 11. Scotney. Ballots have been specially arranged b.v Peggy Price, and vocal numbers will be given by Mifanwy Davies and 11. W. Dowling.
