A STITCH IN TIME. Woman first realised the possibilities of the needle 2000 or so years ago. Some of these first needles and awls, made of bone and with very long, sham ends, are among the acquisitions just made by the trustees of the British Museum. These clumsy needles were found by Prof-ssor Gordon Chtlde during excavations on the site of Stone-lmdt dwellings nl Skarn Brae. Orkney. From ilie same place have come perforated boar tusks, used as necklaces, bone pins and borets. a fine shovel of ox scapula, a heavy polished stone axe. and a pick of red deer antler.
