CHILLED BEEF

Experimental Shipment from Wairarapa PORT FAIRY’S CARGO By Telegraph—Press Association. Masterton, Jan. 6. The Port Fairy, which is scheduled to leave Wellington on February 3, is to take, as part of her cargo, an experimental shipment of chilled beef consigned by T. Borthwick and Sous, Ltd.. The beef will be drawn entirely from the Wairarapa district. A start will be made with killing for the shipment at Waingawa toward the end of this month. The shipment, which is purely experimental, will be the first from Wairarapa and the second from the Dominion since the war. A representative of T. Borthwick and Sons, Ltd., said that though there were difficulties in connection with such a shipment, it was felt that these could be overcome. They were using experience gained when a shipment of chilled beef was sent to England from the firm’s Moreton works at Brisbane about three months ago. That shipment had proved satisfactory. The shipment will consist of hindquarters only, and the whole process, from killing to chilling, will be carried out at Waingawa. Wairarapa, it was stated, was one of the best parts of New Zealand in which to conduct the. experiment as the type of beef here was particularly good. In order to build up trade, it was added, monthly shipments would be necessary. The Port Fairy is being specially fitted for the carriage of the chilled beef.
