Supreme Court Returns r DECREASE IN DIVORCES Supreme Court returns for 1032 show that the number of persons convicted in criminal cases was slightly in excess of the total for 1031, whereas the number sentenced under section 181 of the Justices of the Peace Act was three fewer. Decrees nisi sealed show a decrease of 24, and of decrees absolute, sealed, there was a decrease of 33. Twenty more discharges in bankruptcy were granted than in 1031. Two hundred and sixty-five civil actions were commenced, as against 350 during the. previous year, and the amounts claimed show au increase of slightly more than £lOOO. The total amount of fees col-, lected was £514 less than the year before. Detailed figures are given below, returns for 1031 being shown in parentheses: — Criminal: Persons convicted, 38 (33) ; persons acquitted, 19 (11); persons sentenced under section 181 of the Justices of the Peace Act, 130 (133). Divorce: Petitions filed for restitution, 11 (22): dissolution, 155 (148); trials by judge alone, 156 (176) ; trials by jury. 6 (2); decrees nisi scaled, 106 (130): decrees absolute sealed, 107 (140). Bankruptcy: Debtors’ petitions filed. 54 (58); creditors’ petitions filed,. 26 (30) : adjudications on creditors’ petitions, 16 (2,0); discharges granted, 30 (10). Civil:- Actions commenced, 26a (3a9); amount, claimed in actions commenced, £229,437 (£228,128); actions tried by judge. 98 (136): actions tried by common jury, 20 (15). . Sales by mortgagees through registrar: Applications to conduct sale, 117 (IbZ); number of sales, 69 (72). Fees collected, £12,100/3/6 (£12,614 1/8).
