HOLIDAY CLOSING

Christmas & New Year Shopping WELLINGTON HOURS Since Christmas Day this year and New Year's Day will both fall on Sundays, the majority of people will have three and a half clear days of holiday on each occasion. Friday will be the late shopping night in each week, and the usual closing shortly after noon on Saturday, December 24 and 31, will be observed. The 'shops will therefore be closed from early Saturday afternoon until Wednesday morning, since both Monday and Tuesday will be holidays. These shopping arrangements have been approved by both the Drapers’, Clothiers’ and Boot Retailers’ Associations, aud the Master Grocers’ Association. Some consternation lias been caused in Dunedin by the suggestion that grocers in that city might close for practically the whole of the period between Christmas and New Year. The Licensed Victuallers’ Association has advised hotelkeepers that bars may be opened on Monday, December 26. The Licensing Act, 1908, provides that licensed premises shall be closed on Christmas Day, but it does not make any provision for the observance of the official holiday on the Monday when Christmas Day falls on the Sunday.
