HUTT VALLEY NEWS

Satisfaction is felt at Wilford School that the average attendance for the year is 265, which will keep 'the school in its* present grade. The roll is still increasing. Intimation was received by the Upper Hutt Borough Council at its last meeting from the Land and Survey Department that the council's lease of the Maori blockhouse had expired. The council decided to renew the lease for a further term of five years. Mr. F. N. Hastings, who has been a relieving teacher at Wilford School, has been reappointed for a further term.

•LEAGUE OF MOTHERS Petone Branch Formed The inaugural meeting of the Petone League of Mothers was particularly well attended when Mrs. Elliott, Dominion president. Mrs. White, provincial president, and Mrs. Kersley, hon. organising secretary, superintended the formation of the branch. Very complete arrangements ihad been made, and the hall was tastefully decorated. In introducing the chairman, Mrs. Kersley briefly' outlined the. progress of the league since its inspection by the Lady Alice Fergusson in 1926. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayoress of Petone, Mrs. D. McKenzie ; the president of the Mothers’ 'Union, Mrs. Gerard; and the Wellington provincial secretary, Mrs. Ernest Hadfield. Mrs. White briefly welcomed those present, and expressed the hope that from that meeting there would flourish a branch in Petone. She then introduced the president, Mrs. J. S. Elliott Mrs. Elliott, in a practical but sympathetic talk, outlined the aims and objects of the league, emphasising the fact that it was a non-political and non-sectarian movement the only claim for membership being that of home-makers. She paid a tribute to the Mothers’ Union, which was really the parent of the league. Mrs. Elliott stressed the point that the league could not be used to collect money for any outside objects, and members had no financial responsibilities save a nominal subscription. In expressing the hope that the league would flourish, the speaker emphasised the broadening effect on the character when all classes of women met together on the common basis of home-makers to study subjects which tended for the uplift of home life. It was proposed and carried unanimously that a branch be formed, and a representative local provisional under the convenership of Mrs. H. W. Kersley, was set up to suggest the future of the branch .and to promote its welfare in the district More than 70 names of intending members were handed in.
