Law-breaking Licensees WARNING BY MAGISTRATE Dominion Special Service. Mastortoo, June 4. “So far as the conduct of most hotels in the Walrarapa Licensing District is concerned, it 1b still good, but we notice that the record as far as convictions are concerned Is not so good,” observed Mr. J. Miller, 8.M., at the annual meeting of the Wairarapa Licensing Comuiltlec, held at Cartertou to-day. Sitting on the committee with Mr. Miller were Messrs. W. Howard Booth, T. H. Hughes, F. W. Smith, U. T. Reece, and J. Sauuders. Mr. Miller warned licensees who disregarded the laws that their licenses were iu jeopardy. Sergeant Dyer stated that the conducting of the Royal Oak Hotel, Carterton, by William Donovan, was most unsatisfactory. After-hour trading had been going on, mid oue conviction bad been entered against the licensee, while a further charge was pending nekt court, day. Mr. Miller pointed out. that it a conviction was entered on this latter cuarge, tbc-llcensce would have had two convictions within six mouths, and the committee could cancel his license. The committee warued Donovan, but granted him a renewal of his license. Mr. Miller pointed out, however, that the committee had power to review the matter after the pending charge bad been heard. When an application from 11. G. King for renewal of his license in respect to the Gladstone Hotel came before the committee, the chairman commented that King bad had two convictions, not within six months of each other, however, otherwise his license might have been .cancelled. Renewal of their licenses were granted the following:—C. A. Gray, Marquis of Normanby, Carterton; H. Fahey, Taratalil; W. Donovan, Royal Oak, Carterton; T. Quin, Club, Carterton; H. G. King, Gladstone; M. A. Quin,. Club, Martinborough; F. C. Yule, Empire, Featherston; W. Marshall, Royal, Featherston; P. .T. McArdle, Martinborough; L. P. Clark, Tauberenikau; J. T, Wilson, Foresters' Arms, Grey town; F. H. Rennie, Grey town; E. ’.l’. Wilkins, Club, Greytown; N. A. Christensen, Marine, Whakatakl; JI. Marshall. Provincial, Upper Hutt; F. J. Evans, Morrison's Bush. A publican’s license was granted 11. R. Jury, Taeru. Permanent transfer of the' Trentiimn Hotel, Upper Hutt, from Joseph Quin to Norman Roland Butler, was granted. Transfer of the Tinul Hotel from F. Bird to R. J. Stevenson was granted, and Stevenson was granted a publican’s license. His application for removal of the license to other premises was granted. J". Phillips was granted a renewal of his accommodation house license In respect to the Lake Ferry Hotel., . The Greytown hotels were given permission ;t.o put. their lights out. at 10 p.m. on week nights, and 9 p.m. on Sundays.
