NOT CLOSING

Port of Foxton

A RUMOUR DENIED

Dominion Special Service.

Palmerston North, May 5.

The monthly meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board was held yesterday. Mr. J. Linklater, M.P., presided. A communication was received from the Manawatu Mills, Ltd., Palmerston North, asking if there was any truth in the rumour that the port was to be clos-

ed. The chairman gave a denial to the rumour. The secretary submitted figures which showed that the board was increasing its business gradually. It was anticipated that this month would prove a record. Members referred to the benefits to be derived by shipping through the port and. said it would never be closed. It was decided that no rate be levied this year in view of the increase in business. Motions of sympathy were passed to the relatives of the late Mr. F. Lawton, ex-pilot, who lost his life in the wreck of the Progress, and to Messrs. Holm and Co. in the loss of some of their crew and boat. It was reported that good progress was being maintained in connection with the banking of Rush Flat, the bank having been completed for a distance of 40 chains.
